What Is Judo?

The gentle way: technique, strategy, and self-control over force.

Judo is a modern Japanese martial art founded in 1882 by Jigoro Kano. Built on the principles of efficiency, balance, and mutual respect, judo emphasizes using an opponent's energy rather than relying on strength alone.

History of Judo

Jigoro Kano studied traditional Japanese jiu-jitsu and distilled the most effective techniques into a new system he called judo, 'the gentle way.' He established the Kodokan in Tokyo, and judo spread worldwide, becoming an Olympic sport in 1964.

Judo Techniques

Judo training encompasses standing and ground techniques.

  • Nage-waza (throwing techniques)
  • Ne-waza (groundwork, pins, holds, transitions)
  • Ukemi (breakfalling)
  • Kumi-kata (grip fighting)
  • Randori (free practice)

Judo Values

Beyond technique, judo carries forward the ethical foundation of bushidō. Students develop respect, courage, integrity, honor, loyalty, self-control, and compassion, qualities that extend far beyond the mat.
